Main page > AI-Use Level Descriptors for Assignments
Module Leaders need to ensure that all assignment briefs explicitly state how GenAI (generative artificial intelligence) can be used within each assessment. To ensure consistency, this should be one of the following three levels, using the standard statement provided. Please copy all of the text in the relevant box into your assignment briefs so that it is clear to students what the boundaries of AI use are.
You can download these descriptors in Word format, which may be easier to copy into your briefs. (This direct link may not work on all devices, if you have problems please try this alternative link for the downloadable descriptors and click Editing in the top right corner, then Open in Desktop App).
Level 1
This level should also be used for any assessment where it is not possible for the students to use AI tools, such as exams or observed skills. If you are thinking about using this level for assignments, consider how you will be able to identify students who have used AI tools without acknowledgement.
It is expected that Level 1 will be used infrequently where the assignment Learning Outcomes would be compromised by the use of AI – not simply where staff wish to opt out.
Guidance on using AI:
📕 Level 1 โ Not Permitted
The use of AI tools is not permitted in any part of this assessment except for limited writing support as permitted by the University Human and Computer Proof Reading policy.
Level 2
This is likely to be the level applied to most pieces of coursework, because of the practicalities of enforcing Level 1. If you are happy to permit students to use AI more extensively (e.g. for data processing or image generation) should they wish to, but it is not a requirement of the assessment, add some additional guidance in the space provided.
Guidance on using AI:
๐ Level 2 – Some use Permitted
Some use of AI tools is permitted in the research/early idea generation stages of this assignment but you must ensure that the work you submit is your own. It should not contain material produced or significantly amended by AI unless all of the following apply:
- The brief specifically permits this
- It is used in accordance with the University Principles for AI use
- It is appropriately acknowledged and referenced.
Use the reference builder to learn how to reference AI generated ideas and material.
Remember that AI is not always accurate and can reproduce bias. See the AI guidance to learn more.
**Module Leaders should add additional detail about permitted use of AI for this assignment **
Level 3
This will be used where AI is actively integrated into the assessment brief.
Guidance on using AI:
๐ Level 3 โ Integrated
The use of AI tools is integrated in this assessment. Further guidance is included in this assessment brief.
Ensure any AI generated material is clearly identified and referenced both within the assignment and in the reference list using:
