Introducing Students to AI Tools

Please note: The use of AI within teaching and learning is a rapidly developing area. This information reflects our current thinking in July 2023, but please check back regularly as we will be updating the information on this page as things develop.

Allocate part of a teaching session to developing students’ understanding of artificial intelligence and relating it to the assessment tasks on your module.

Tasks

  1. Discuss the aims of the assessment task (i.e. what knowledge and skills does the assessment expect students to demonstrate)
  2. Identify an inappropriate use of an AI tool to do this task and identify why it would be inappropriate.
[Answers might include cutting and pasting from ChatGPT which is inappropriate because you are not submitting work that’s your own, also because you’ve not developed the skills and knowledge that the assessment required; because graduate jobs expect you to able to have these levels of skills and knowledge.]
  3. Discuss what might be an appropriate use of an AI tool to do this task, and why it would be appropriate.
[Answers might include using it to scaffold/enhance carrying out the task but you still do a lot of the thinking and writing; you gain the skills and knowledge asked for in the assignment.]
