Upskill Yourself for an AI world

Generative AI has the potential to be a game changer, and it is going to be a part of the world that our students graduate into.

The University has produced a set of principles for how staff can use AI responsibly in their everyday work, alongside the principles for using AI in teaching and learning.

There is also a new Library Guide on AI, primarily intended for helping students to build their AI literacy, but staff who are new to AI will find it useful as well.

There are some great resources available which you can use to learn more about how AI works and how you can make better use of it. These are a few that we think are particularly useful, if you have found something that we should be adding here please drop us an email: stlt@hud.ac.uk

Most of these courses are quite short, and we have indicated the approximate time required to complete where the provider has indicated this.

Microsoft Learn

Empower educators to explore the potential of artificial intelligence

53 minutes

This course gives a good overview of how AI works and how AI tools can be used as part of developing teaching materials. It’s aimed at educators at all levels so some of the material might not be relevant for us in HE but it’s a good starting point. As you might expect a lot of the focus is on Microsoft’s own tools but it does also cover other platforms.

Linkedin Learning

To access Linkedin Learning through your University account, start with this special login page.

LinkedIn have a range of courses on AI, often focussed on a specific area like project management or marketing. Because they are designed to be standalone, you’ll find that many of them contain an overview of the technology and basic prompting, so you may want to skip this to get to the specifics you are interested in – there are bookmarks provided to make this easy.

Search their library to see if there is something specific to your area of interest, but do check the publication date, anything before autumn 2022 probably won’t relate to the current breed of Generative AI platforms.

Here are a few recommendations:

Generative AI for Creative Pros: Opportunities, Issues, and Ethics

1 hour

This course takes a look at how can be used in the creative sector, offering suggestions both for using the tools to plan and develop ideas and for producing text, images, audio and video which contribute to the final product.

As well as a showing what the technology can do, there is a good overview of the ethical considerations which come with these tools.

How to Research and Write Using Generative AI Tools: How to work with AI

1 hour 15 minutes

In this course, writer Dave Birss shares strategies for writing prompts for research and to improve your writing by being very specific about the results that you want.

He demonstrates that by using the CREATE framework to develop prompts that are specific (and often a paragraph long rather than a sentence) and include examples of the kind of result you want, you can tailor the results from AI tools to meet your requirements.

Times Higher Education

The Times Higher is running a series of articles from Seb Dianati and Suman Laudari at Charles Darwin University on using ChatGPT in education, including 100 suggested prompts to accomplish various tasks.

Please be aware that some of the suggestions, particularly those involving uploading student work to the ChatGPT would not be acceptable at the University of Huddersfield and may lead to legal issues.

JISC National Centre for AI

This is a series of blog posts focussing on using AI tools within an educational setting. It starts with a general introduction Navigating Prompt Roles then looks at specific tools, including How to use Microsoft Copilot

The National Centre for AI has also curated a series of AI success stories from the community
